In reference to the communication addressed by the ITUC and the ETUC regarding Colombia*, sent on the 3rd of February 2019 to all MEPs, we wish to express:
1. A sector of the Colombian trade union movement has visited, and will continue to do so, the European Union to defend the adoption of a Commercial Agreement with Colombia. It is not true that our position “is the exact opposite of what Colombian civil society (…) is committed to” that supposedly requests suspending the FTA negotiations. The great majority of Colombians, of Colombian political parties, Congress, Colombian workers and the civic and community movement are in favour of these treaties and they have expressed their will through democratic elections such as those in 2006 when 80% of the voters elected Congressmen and a President who defend commercial agreements. Almost 90% of the Congress approved the FTAs with the USA, Canada and EFTA. (...)
